About the workshop

The laptop repairing experts behind LaptopHaber.com

14 certified engineers, one workshop in London, and 38,000+ repairs since 2014. This page is the honest version: who does the work, what we own, and the standards we hold ourselves to.

Our story

It started because too many people were being quoted for a board

In 2014 our founder was working the counter at a high-street repair chain watching the same conversation happen twice a week. A laptop came in dead. The diagnostic sheet said "motherboard failure". The quote said £590. The customer, sensibly, went and bought a new laptop, and a perfectly repairable machine went into a skip.

The fault was almost never the motherboard. It was one component on it — a 40p capacitor that had gone short, a fuse that had blown, a charging IC that had failed. Nobody at that chain had a microscope or a set of board schematics, so nobody could say so.

LaptopHaber started as one bench, one stereo microscope and a hot-air station in a rented unit. 12 years on we are 14 engineers and 38,000+ repairs, and a meaningful share of our work now arrives from other repair shops — the ones honest enough to say "we do not solder, but we know someone who does".

Who we are

Who We Are

LaptopHaber is an independent laptop repair workshop in London, trading since 2014. We are 14 certified engineers — not a franchise, not a reseller, and not an outsourcing desk that ships your machine somewhere else. Every repair is carried out in our own workshop by a named member of staff whose work you can see on the our engineers page.

The business is run by its engineers rather than by a sales team, which is why you will find published prices, advice against repairs that are not worth it, and a bench that does the component-level work most high-street shops send away.

What we do

What We Do

We repair laptops — all of one thing rather than a little of everything. That covers display assemblies, board-level microsoldering, batteries and charging circuits, storage and memory upgrades, liquid damage restoration, data recovery, thermal servicing and keyboard, trackpad and hinge work.

We serve walk-in customers from the London workshop and the rest of the UK through a free tracked mail-in service. We also take overflow board-level work from other repair shops who do not solder. Full detail and prices are on the services and pricing pages.

Why you can trust this site

A trusted source on laptop repair

Everything published here is written by the engineers who do the work, reviewed before it goes live, and priced from invoices we have actually issued. We publish the numbers other repairers hide, we name the people doing the work, and we tell customers when not to spend money — roughly one machine in nine that reaches our bench gets a recommendation against repair.

Our full process is documented in the editorial guidelines, including how we research guides, how prices are set, our policy on AI-generated content, and how we handle corrections. Where we are wrong, we change it and say so.

  • Named engineers, not anonymous bylines
  • Published prices, reviewed periodically
  • No paid links, no guest posts, no affiliate steering
  • Independent — not tied to any manufacturer
How we work

Four rules we do not bend

Every repair shop says it is honest. These are the four specific, checkable commitments that make the claim mean something — and they are the reasons customers come back.

  • Fix the component, not the invoice

A shop without a microscope has exactly one answer to a board fault: replace the board. We bought the microscopes, the rework stations and the schematic access so that a failed capacitor costs what a failed capacitor should cost.

  • Tell people not to spend money

Roughly one machine in nine that reaches our bench gets a recommendation not to repair it. We would rather lose the job and keep the relationship than take £300 for work that leaves someone with a laptop still worth £200.

  • Treat data as though it were evidence

Drives are imaged before board-level work, stored in a locked cabinet, signed in and out, and wiped from our systems on a schedule. Engineers do not browse customer files. It is written into contracts, not just into a policy page.

  • Quote once, in writing

One number, covering parts, labour and VAT, before any tool touches the machine. Find a second fault after opening? We stop and re-quote. The invoice never exceeds the figure you approved.

What we own

You cannot do component-level work without the right bench

Anyone can put "board-level repair" on a website. Far fewer can show you the equipment that makes it possible. This is what is actually in our workshop.

Stereo microscopes
Component-level inspection and microsoldering at up to 45× magnification
Hot-air rework stations
Profiled BGA removal, reballing and chip replacement
Bench DC power supplies
Current-draw analysis to locate shorts before anything is desoldered
Thermal imaging camera
Finds the component that is heating when the board is under load
Schematics and boardview
Licensed access for the platforms we service, so rails can be traced properly
Ultrasonic cleaning bath
Controlled corrosion removal after liquid ingress
Forensic drive imagers
Write-blocked, sector-level copies taken before any recovery attempt
ESD-safe benching
Grounded mats, wrist straps and humidity control throughout the workshop

Right to repair

Every laptop we fix is one that does not go in a skip

Manufacturing a single laptop accounts for the large majority of its lifetime carbon footprint — the electricity it uses over five years is a small fraction of what it cost the planet to build. Extending a working machine by three years is one of the highest-leverage things an owner can do, and it is the entire argument behind the right-to-repair movement.

That is also why we publish our prices, write repair guides that show people how to diagnose faults themselves, and tell customers plainly when a machine is not worth saving. Parts we remove are recycled under WEEE, and drives we retire are sanitised before disposal.

What customers say about us

2,147 verified reviews at an average of 4.9 out of 5. Three of them, in full.

  • Two other shops quoted me for a whole new motherboard on a nine-month-old XPS. LaptopHaber.com found a shorted capacitor, replaced it, and charged me a fifth of the cheapest other quote. They sent photos of the board before and after.

    Hannah Whitlock · Architect, Clerkenwell

    Board-level repair · Dell XPS 15

  • I spilled most of a flat white into a MacBook Air the night before a deadline. They took it at 9am, called me by lunchtime with an honest go/no-go, and had it back to me working on the Thursday. The data was all there.

Tom Ackerley · Postgraduate researcher, Southwark

Liquid damage · MacBook Air M2

  • We run fourteen laptops across two sites and they handle all of them. What I actually value is being told when not to repair something — they have talked us out of spending money twice now.
